The photosynthetic antennae from the marine picoplankters Ostreococcus and Synechococcus : structure and photoacclimation

Cyanobacteria of the Synechococcus genus constitute a major component of marine ecosystems. The first chapter describes the effect the growth irradiance over a number of characteristics (C, N and pigment contents, optical properties, etc...) of WH8102, whose genome was recently completely sequenced. The second chapter describes the structure and photoacclimatation of the phycobilisomes (PBS) of this strain, with emphasis on two novel phycoerythrin-associated linker polypeptides (MpeD and MpeE). The third chapter describes the marine chromatic adaptation groupe IV in Synechococcus spp. M16.17 and M11.1, a process occurring when cells are transferred from blue and white light and vice versa. The fourth chapter presents an analysis of the PBS damage during exposure to UV radiations and a study on cyanobacterial caroteno-proteins. Finally, the last chapter studies the light-harvesting complexes of another marine picophytoplankter, the picoeucaryote Ostreococus tauri (Prasinophyceae), providing some new insights into the evolution of this primitive green algal group.
