OFLOPS-Turbo: Testing the Next-Generation OpenFlow switch

Résumé

The deployment experience of OpenFlow support in production networks has highlighted variable limitations between network devices and vendors. Reactive control is possible solely in environments with low flow arrival rates, while support of high throughput control channels is limited to software switches. Recent vendor efforts have introduced OpenFlow support on 10 GbE optical switches, increasing further the performance requirements to support the switch control plane. This paper presents the integration of OFLOPS, an OpenFlow switch evaluation platform, with the OSNT platform, a hardware-accelerated traffic generation and capture system. We exploit the support of the platform for 10 GbE traffic to present an initial evaluation of flow table manipulation capabilities of a representative collection of 10 GbE OpenFlow switch product. We interpret the evolution of OpenFlow support by comparison with historical data.
