Dialysis' emergency start in 2012 in France: evolutions since 2006 and perspectives

Résumé

In 2006, a previous study based on the French Nephrology Epidemiology Information Registry (REIN) showed a high proportion of dialysis’ emergency start (26.4%), associated with poorer prognosis (one-year survival 74,2% vs 87.4%). Since, significant efforts have been made to enhance early patients’ referral to nephrologist, and to improve their management at end-stage kidney failure. In the same time, guidelines evolved toward late initiation of dialysis, based on uremic signs. This study aims to compare the proportion, profile and prognosis of dialysis’ emergency start patients in 2006 and 2012. (Intro.)
