L’homme est-il son propre père ? L’idée d’auto-engendrement, d’Irénée de Lyon à Grégoire de Nysse

Is man his own father? Or can he, conversely, be his own child? The possibility seems to be the antithesis of Irenaeus' anthropology. In fact, this idea of self-begetting would later be expressed in an unprecedented way by Gregory of Nyssa, illustrating the freedom of the children of God. Yet Irenaeus was also one of those who very early on defended and magnified the free role of the human being and his or her own spiritual growth. The point here, then, is to appreciate his own originality, as well as his contribution to a theological tradition, not necessarily contradictory, that extends through Philo and Origen to Gregory of Nyssa.
L’homme est-il son propre père ? Ou peut-il être, inversement, son propre enfant ? L’éventualité semble aux antipodes de l’anthropologie d’Irénée. De fait, cette idée d’auto-engendrement s’exprimera plus tard de manière inédite chez Grégoire de Nysse pour illustrer la liberté des enfants de Dieu. Or Irénée compte aussi parmi ceux qui ont très tôt défendu et magnifié le libre rôle de l’être humain et sa propre croissance spirituelle. Il s'agit donc ici d'apprécier son originalité propre, en même temps que sa contribution à une tradition théologique, pas forcément contradictoire, qui à travers Philon et Origène va jusqu’au Nyssène.
